Day 11, Apiti to Palmerston North

Trail angel - someone who performs random acts of kindness for people on the trail

Having bid farewell to my very own Trail angels from Warkworth I headed on my way.

On the way out of Apiti I bumped into the Swart family again, who are cycling for Heart Kids. I met Sarah and Logan on the way to the Pouto point ferry.

The roads we’re sent on for this trip are on the whole  lovely and quiet, today was no exception, and the scenery was just stunning. Around every corner was another amazing vista so I had to steel myself against stopping too often to take pictures!

I met two ladies from Rotorua who were very strong cyclists. They invited me to join them and I tried but Nola and Jan were too swift for me.

Knowing I had a shorter day and friends to stay with spurred me on to get the job done. I cycled into Palmerston North to send home some stuff I wasn’t using, every kg helps!

Robert and Janet were the people I boarded with during my final year of my undergrad degree. They now live just north of Palmy on a gorgeous lifestyle block they run as a B&B. They have delightful gardens, chickens and beef cattle. Ooh, fresh eggs for breakfast.

Janet arrived home just after I got there and the catch up commenced. She was just as kind as I remembered and soon we were chatting away like old times. Robert was home soon after that and as a former mechanic and all round handy man, was able to get my chain and cassette shiny clean.  Their daughter came for a delicious dinner and a catch up too and I realised really good friends feel just like family.
