Brekkie In Dargaville
Ferry across the Kaipara Harbour
108km 1112m elevation
The mission for today was getting to the ferry by 3.30pm to cross the Kaipara Harbour. I got the jump on Scott and Nerena as they are faster than me
The plan was working well until Dargaville. I made the mistake of trying to get my noisy bottom bracket fixed at a local bike shop. A tonne of grit got into it along the beach and I was worried it might cause problems further down the track. I was told she could see me immediately, but after waiting 45 mins the mechanic couldn’t get the crank undone. A bit frustrated by time wasted.
This meant riding more in the heat of the day, and mate it was hot. The logging trucks along to Pouto point were lovely though, slowing right down and giving us a wide berth.
I was relieved to see the ferry, and it was fascinating to see all the bikes loaded on board They just kept going! The ferry didn’t get us in until 7:30 so we rocked up to the accommodation at 8pm and it takes a while to reset for the next day. Another late night was not what my ribs needed. They’re gradually getting more sore.
A big mistake was staying at the cruising club in Helensville as they had just caught a Marlin and were celebrating hard. Plus marae style sleeping isn’t good with snorers in the room and broken ribs. At 2am I considered packing my bike and heading home. Literally. To Otahuhu!
But the lovely sunrise from an early start almost made it worth it.
