Day 4 Helensville to Ararimu

Today was my favourite day so far. I got to meet up with so many friends along the way.  Some people are amazing. Some people are awful.  An awful person almost made me a temporary hood ornament on their people mover. They pulled out to pass a truck on a short straight. I don’t know if they just didn’t see me or if they did see me and just didn’t care. Fortunately the truck driver was alert to the situation and slowed down to let them pass in time. The rest of the day was with am...

Day 2 Ahipara to Kauri Coast 142km 1731 elevation

Today almost broke me. It was hard. Very hot and super hilly, but we did it.  Hind sight is a wonderful thing.  For example-  1) I wish my bike was a bit lighter,  28kg at Cape Reinga with 4L of water on board. But I can’t think of anything I’d like to leave behind! So the only thing I could have done was spend thousands more on a space age bike. Day 1 Cape Reinga to Ahipara

I don’t think many of us slept very well the night before the first day of the Tour.. The drive was quite strange with a sea fog obscuring the view most of the way to the cape.   It cleared just as we got to the car park, and I was grateful that it looked like it was going to be overcast,  There isn’t any shelter on the beach. The car park was heaving with people in high viz and lycra so we were fashionably late to the party. A bit of a miss calculation on how long it would take us...

Pride goes before a fall

Oh yes, I was feeling proud.  Proud of all the hard work I’d put in leading up to this point.  To feel fit and know if I wanted to, I could ride all day.   Not arrogant tho, I was just enjoying a feeling of quiet accomplishment that comes after months of tough training.   Waitangi day dawned fine and calm, perfect weather for the ride Scott and Nerena had planned around Riverhead.  With no weight on the bike I was feeling strong and loved being out ...

Training weekend around Kawhia

Scott had done a great job with calculating our distances each day for the Tour. but I’d mentioned to the team I was sceptical I’d be able to make to the ferry in time on the third day.  He kindly set up a training weekend to replicate the distances and elevation we’d encounter on day two and three so I could have an idea of what we were in for. Day one - Proposed distance 110km, Proposed elevation 2000m The first 15km for this ride was along the beach from Kawhia up to Aotea.&nb...
